Fifty Pages of Love

A FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY PRESENT

After seeing one of my handmade sketchbooks, a former Creative Director of mine commissioned me to create a one-of-a-kind book for his wife’s fiftieth birthday. He reached out to family and friends for contributions to the book and we collaborated on bringing it all together into 50 pages. It was produced using a vast collection of papers: from the finest papers available anywhere to bits and pieces found in forgotten drawers and printed ephemera that has sat waiting years for the opportunity to be re-purposed. Every page a unique creation.

One of my favorite moments in the book came from a quote by their son, “Waiting.” The end of the quote was on the back of a photo of their son inside a rather elaborate envelope: “Nothing good ever comes of it.” The whole book was full of small discoveries and very personal and meaningful references. Working on this book gave me a small glimpse into the life of a relative stranger to me. Someone I only had the opportunity to meet fewer times than the fingers I haven’t managed to cut with a table saw (not many). The sentiments expressed in this book are incredible. A testament to the character of the individual for which they are meant. Simply beautiful.

This is one of my all-time favorite projects.
